During my search on the web about security related information I found this very nice report (it is outdated I know) but I think it is funny to see what the people believe in Very Happy

As far as I know it is not possible, but what do you know is their a way to do so ? What I could imagine is that a hacker will be able to control the system. So turn of the vans and blow up the CPU and GPU but that's no bomb.

What do you think ?

Here is the link !

This story fits perfectly to first april's joke corner. Especially lovely is this statement:

Code:

It is already possible for an assassin to send someone an e-mail
with an innocent-looking attachment connected to it. When the receiver downloads the
attachment, the electrical current and molecular structure of the CPU is altered,
causing it to blast apart like a large hand grenade.

That's impossible Very Happy

But what do you think about the theory of blowing the CPU. Just think, turning of the fan and then running a really intensive task and even better raise the voltage Very Happy ... but I think that's not possible through the operation system or ?

Yes, something can be done remotely. If badguy has admin level on windows box, then ring0, drivers and all that low-level stuff is accessible. You can overwrite firmware (cd-roms, videocards, sound cards), possibly even modify CPU-s microcode. Turning CPU or GPU fan off can be possible, malicious voltages, etc ... basically it is possible to really fu*k-up the box. Blowing up ... maybe CRT display (old model) can explode, when video adapter is set to very high res and thats for long time. Maybe there are Power Supplies that can be operated via some low-level code and then brought to critical coditions. Basically CRT displays, Power Units, UPS-es, this kind of stuff can explode in some conditions. Just my $0.02 Smile

Blowing up computers.... Oh the memories Smile

I remember telling my coworker that under no circumstances should the little switch on the back of a computers power supply be flicked. I live in the UK, which runs at 240v AC. By flicking the power supply to the 110v setting causes it to promptly explode into a ball of flames with lots of foul smelling smoke (I know from personal experiences).
