A hashed salt works like this:
1. Take a string (e.g. your password, lets say "g00dpas$") and hash it via the MD5 algorithm.

The exact format?

MD5 Hashes are 32 characters long, comprised of numbers 0-9 and letters a-f, lowercase. Thats... about all I can think of.
