hello guys

i have 2 questions

first can you use rainbow tables to crack linux password (provided i have the shadow file)

what is the hashing algorythm used in linux is it MD5 if so doesnt md5 hashes only create hexa decimal numbers so how come those those linux hashes have wired characters like $ sing and etc...

Maybe that shadow file contains stuff like this:

Code:

root:$1$e8aD.GAJ$RVs8vl4KaXt/hr2pLAHjc.:12515:0:99999:7:::

$1$ means, that it's md5 one-way hash.
"e8aD.GAJ" - those 8 characters are salt for making password cracking harder.
"RVs8vl4KaXt/hr2pLAHjc" - it's base64 encoded md5 hash of the salted password.

As soon, as i can understand, there is no help from rainbow crack in current moment in case of salted passwords.[/quote]
