Different software uses different hash variants... for example phpBB2 uses plain MD5 which are relatively easy to crack, but phpBB3 uses a variant of MD5 which makes cracking a LOT harder (However it can be done). Also, finding member's password hashes is *much* harder on most free forum hosting sites because SQL backup, resotre and download features are generally disabled.
