If the version isn't on the bottom of a page, try going to http://www.yoursite.com/phpbb2/ (or phpbb3 or forum or whatever the directory is) and deducing the version first. Phpbb 3.x is not easily hackable, so your best chance is to look for other ways to get in. Is that forum on dedicated server on shared hosting? If it's shared hosting, then search for neighbour websites on same server with know-to-be-exploitable software. Or use vulnerabilities scanner (Acunetix or similar).
