im new to all this and have obtained a md5 hash from a 4rd party site, aparently it has a salt on it, but honestly dont understand this. ive looked at passwordspro and this just confuses me more

A hashed salt works like this:
Code:
1. Take a string (e.g. your password, lets say "g00dpas$") and hash it via the MD5 algorithm.
Result: 91fa9ee6ca11c7c70d97c8a9948830ab

2. Take a random string and append it to the hash (let's say "mysalt")
Result: 91fa9ee6ca11c7c70d97c8a9948830abmysalt

3. Hash that string
Result: af96e73d0113df4068592928b5156032

4. Store that hash (af96e73d0113df4068592928b5156032) and the salt (mysalt) in a database.

5. When someone tries to log into the account, follow the same process as above, and if the hashes match at the end, allow the user to log in.

Basically, if you don't have a salt to go with this hash, you have nothing.
