Shocked

Quantum Computing

The concept of building a quantum computer that is so fast it could crack any encrypted code or solve seemingly impossible mathematical equations with ease has been around for nearly 30 years...

The holy grail of computational science, the technology relies on controlling and observing the behavior of quantum particles -- called qubits -- to deliver enormous processing power. These qubits can be grouped together to represent five different states, bypassing the limitations of the binary model in use since the beginning of the computer age.

Such a quantum machine would require hundreds or even thousands of entangled qubits. The maximum reached so far is 12, but some of the systems that researchers are working with, including those depending on the spins of ions, may be hard to scale up.
