Okay, I run OpenSuse Linux, and I am trying to learn John The Ripper. I have installed it already, but I can't seem to get it to work properly. I've looked through some online tutorials already (like http://osix.net/modules/article/?id=455 and http://nrupentheking.blogspot.com/2011/03/john-ripper-tutorial.html), but they don't seem to help me. First of all, does it matter where I save the text files that will have the DES passwords I want to decrypt? Second, do I need to be in the directory that houses the text files that have the passwords I want to decrypt in order for JTR to be able to work with them? I have tried saving a text files that has one password in the format "userName:password" on my desktop. Then, I changed my directory to my desktop and tried "sudo john -single crackme.txt" (minus the quotation marks). However, whenever I do, I keep getting this message: "stat: crackme.txt: Stale NFS file handle". Does anyone have an idea as to why I keep getting this message?
