Yes I have Ubuntu and Fedora Core 3.
With Fedora Core 3 I have to turn off PCI because it hangs on start up because of my sound in my laptop. (Gateway 3300 which is basically a cheap Toshiba) I tried Ubuntu but its not really apealing to me. All 2.4.x kernels work with my laptop fine but the 2.6.x kernel is what you would call "still under construction" it seems to me that it has not yet got the ;aptop driver support that 2.4.x has got. Alls I can suggest is getting a 2.4.x distro and see if it works if it does and works good for you, download and compile the lastest 2.4.x kernel.

because of all the hassel Im nor really using Linux on my laptop much any more.

can you post de dmesg to see what error alsa gives (if gives anything), I had problems in some cases with alsa and some new 2.6 kernels, very strange errors for example in a 2.6.9 kernel, it gives I/O errors and of course no sound. After updating the kernel the sound worked.

You get some error like "no sound device found" or you don't get errors but no sound?
maybe volumes are muted, check with alsamixer.

If the problem is that don't get the device, maybe the drivers where compiled as modules, so try with modprobe snd-your_card_driver

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Hardy

This is pretty useful.
Just google for tutorials if you get stuck on installation etc.
