This is the info from the /etc/shadow file. I believe that it is MD5 encrypted.

and

ingrid:$1$3nig7Dcr$kQHfcZTojvK/PRsSoUcnX0:::::::

Your assistance would really be appreciated.

Obviously, it's not a normal MD5. What it is then, I don't know.

It's salted Unix-style md5 hash and it's hard-to-crack, because it's basically md5 hash done 1000 times. So obviously cracking speed is more than 1000 times slower compared to simple md5. JTR, Passwordspro - this tools can help.
