Ok so after hours of searching I found a website that I was able to upload my shell to and gained access.

Just got home and found out that I am user "nobody" and I can't read /etc/shadow file because the permission is denied. What can I do to possibly view this file or find a way to get the root password?

Yes - I did search and I found nothing helpfull that I could understand because I have 0 experience with linux systems

I know the basics and I can pretty much figure out what something means in a few minutes. What I meant by 0 was that I don't know the system completely and fully understand how it exactly works.

To read /etc/shadow you need root perm and this is impossible in 99.9% of the cases.

Code:
I have 0 experience with linux systems

Then even if you had root access it would be of no use for you lol

well , it was better to do a search on google and then ask your question
as pexli said , you need r00t permission for /etc/shadow

for getting r00t , you have some option but again as pexli said you fail
in 99% ....

1. running local r00t exploit
2. finding files that root's password stored on it ! [ example : /var/www/confixx/config.php ]
3. login in DB , mybe you got access on all db's in server and get the hash password and crack it ...
4. google.com :p

have fun ^^

Find out kernel version:

Code:

cat /proc/version

If it's old and unpatched, then maybe you are lucky enough to find working local root exploit for specific kernel.
Second option is to look for configuration/administration weaknesses, but this needs pro level in linux Smile
