IMO Eclipse can be a bit intense when first looking at it. I would use a more simple and less integrated software, like Notepad++ or Crimson Editor. They offer features like syntax coloring and auto-indenting, but don't have all the fancy (and possibly confusing) features the other crazy IDE's have.

Also, http://www.w3schools.com has some pretty good beginning tutorials.

I'd use ecplise. It's much more powerful, even for a beginner. When I first learned java in school they also let us work with eclipse... Besides, with eclipse u can complile and run your program at once unlike with n++ or anything. But that's my opinion.

Yea, Eclipse is great, and it is pretty much industry standard. The only problem I have with IDE's in general is the fact that you rely too much on the features. SSH and use VIM Razz
