Okay.. I read up and i know how to root a box using netcat.
But here is my question
1. If i root the a box will the owners know it was rooted?
2. Im not trying to deface all the sites i just want to get one certain site.
3. Do i have to use commands after i root the box? Or will the shell i have show me as the root then?
Thanks!

1.Yes if you don't clean after your enter in box.
2.Great. tar czf /were/you/want/the/archive.tar.gz /which/folder/you/plain/to/tar
3.After you root the box you have window like command prompt in windows and you use same commands like in your shell. |

Thanks! Okay here some quick more.
I plain on using a log cleaner after i enter the box. But after i use that will i be clean? No traces of my ip or anything like that?
How much trouble could someone get into for it?
Can i install a SSH back door and connect to it with a 3rd party ssh program so i can see the files/folders? |

Remember - a log cleaner only gets rid of tracks that you have already made. Your IP address will probably be somwhere in a log file, you cant keep totally clean. If you get caught, its a criminal offence and you are most likely majorly screwed. I know if sombody rooted my server I would certaimly start some kind of legal proceding (ie, press for criminal charges and start my own civil action against the attacker!).
Careful. Its not nice being caught.
If you really must do it, make sure you use a chain of proxies or use a proxy network such as Tor.... although im sure thats a violation of the Terms of Use for the Tor network.
Questions? |

To be honest, if you are careful with the exploits you use it can be pretty undetectable. I mean, if the system administrator has no reason to be suspicious of hackers... he/she is likely to go about their routine without noticing anything. If you get in, get what you need and get out without looking around then you should be fine.
Oh, and obviously if you upload a shell... then delete it before you leave. Also, if you want to remove traces from log files.... DONT delete the entire log. That just looks supicious, and the admin is bound to start investigating. Keep quiet, be efficient and make as little changes to the system as possible and you should be fine.
One last thing... I really do know how tempting it is to leave a cryptic message hidden in some obscure place on the server (like "I was here 09") - its stupid, and only get you caught =p
Hack safely! =]
Insert standard disclaimer here. For my sake, dont go hacking things then blaming me! |

Skill comes with experience, you could always try setting up like a test PC that you can hack (legally) to try an improve. Rooting a box can be quite hard, don't expect to be able to do it straight away!
If in doubt, i find it 100x easier when hacking to socially engineer the targets rather than try and hack the technology. I must have tried at least 20 or so different targets when I first started before i actually managed to gain access to a box!
Whatever you decided to do, liklihood is you wont be able to root the box - but that dosent mean its not worth trying And failure isnt bad, because you probably learnt somthing. |

By its very nature, hacking is illegal..... mostly. Sucks, but true. |
