I would recommend reading up on SQL injection;

http://www.google.com/search?q=SQL+injection

As well as learn some PHP;

http://www.google.com/search?q=PHP+tutorial

And some Perl;

http://www.google.com/search?q=Perl+tutorial

Then grab some phpbb source code, look for vulnerabilities, try to steal cookies, and take my word for it; if you ever get to the admin panel backup the database and copy it to your drive -- from there you can retrieve MD5 passwords, reverse mod passwords and with some luck expose an opening that will allow you to write backdoors all over the site's code.
